Claudio Camilleri and Patrick Tabone will start their run at 3.45 am on Saturday 25th July, and it is expected to last around 35hrs. The run will start at the Independence Gardens in Sliema, hugging the coast to Cirkewwa and aiming for the 9 am ferry. Then clockwise round Gozo before returning to Malta and going from Cirkewwa down the West coast of the island, right round the Southern tip at B’Bugia, through to the 3 cities and Valletta, and finally, hopefully, back to the Independence Gardens in Sliema once again.
The extreme distance is longer than either runner has ever attempted, and includes over 4km vertical elevation (the equivalent of going up 1,500 flights of steps). Taken together with the extreme heat likely at the end of July, this run will be a tough challenge, with no guarantee of success.
The route is mostly trail (much of it fairly harsh) with a good portion of road – best estimate 65:35. It will hug the coast wherever possible. It will also include 2 crossings of the Gozo channel using the public ferry.
These are some combined training statistics of Patrick and Claudio during 2020.
Number of Runs: 300
Distance Covered: 4,000 km (A walk from Valletta to the Northern part of Finland)
Elevation Gained: 75,000 metres (28,000 flights of steps, or more than 8 times Mount Everest!)
